5-Hydroxytryptamine on Ouabain Effect

Abstract
|
|
|
1. To make a study whether or not the direct effct of 5-hydroxptryptamine (5-HT) on the heart plays a role in the developmentof cardiac slowing and cardiac, irregularities in rabbits by 5-HT, influenses of this agent on effects of ouabain, and epinephrine were examined.
2. The cardiac slowing by 5HT was markedly weakened, and the cardiac irregularities were not observed in vagotomized and atropinized rabbits.
3. 5-HT produced marked cardiac irregularities when given to the vagotomized and ouabainized rabbits showing the elevated T-wave and RS-T depression.
4. 5-HT infusion into the vagotomized rabbits decreased significantly the arrhythmic dose of ouabain.
5. The cardiac irregularities in the vagotomized rabbits by-epinephrine were not influenced by 5-HT.
6. The above data indicate that 5-HT facilitates the development of arrhy thimia by ouabain through its direct effect on the heart.
